History and character of Es Castell

Es Castell, located at the eastern end of Menorca, is the closest municipality to the sunrise in all of Spain. Founded in 1771 by the British under the name of Georgetown, it retains a strong English influence in its urban layout and in the architecture of its buildings, such as the emblematic colorful houses in the port of Cales Fonts. Its military history is marked by the presence of the Castle of San Felipe and the Fortress of La Mola, witnesses of the conflicts between the British, French and Spanish for the control of the island.
