A bit of history

Ciutadella de Menorca was the capital of the island until the 18th century, during the British domination. Its medieval layout and its stately air, the result of centuries of Arab, Catalan and Italian influence, make it an authentic open-air museum. The old town

The heart of Ciutadella is its old town, a maze of narrow streets with lively squares. Highlights include Ses Voltes, with its characteristic arches, the Plaza del Borne, the nerve center of the city, and the Plaza de la Libertad, with a traditional market offering fresh local produce. The port of Ciutadella

Small, nestled between cliffs and full of charm, the port of Ciutadella is one of the most picturesque of Menorca. Nearby beaches and coves

Although in the city there are no big beaches, a few kilometers away there are some of the most famous beaches in the south of Menorca: Cala en Turqueta, Macarella and Macarelleta, Son Saura or Es Talaier. All of them offer crystal clear waters and white sand, ideal to enjoy the Mediterranean.

Festivals and traditions

The Festival of Sant Joancelebrated every 23rd and 24th of June, are the most emblematic event in Ciutadella. The Menorcan horses, the hullabaloo, the music and the festive atmosphere fill the streets with color and tradition. It is a unique experience that attracts visitors from all over the world and is an essential part of the local identity.

Gastronomy

In Ciutadella you will be able to taste the best of Menorcan cuisine: lobster stew, cheeses with the denomination of origin cheeses with denomination of origin Mahón-Menorca, the sobrasadaand typical sweets such as “carquinyols”. Both in the port and in the center you will find from tapas bars to haute cuisine restaurants.

It is an ideal place to buy local products: avarcas (Menorcan sandals), handmade pottery, Mediterranean-inspired jewelry and locally produced food.

How to get to and around

Ciutadella is about 45 km from Mahón, a journey of approximately 45 minutes by car. In high season, there are buses connecting the town with beaches and other towns. The old town is largely pedestrianized, so the best way to explore it is on foot.
