Sant Joan festivities in Menorca: a magical start to the summer season

A living tradition that transforms Ciutadella

Every June, Menorca dresses in emotion, history and culture with the Fiestas de Sant Joan. More than a celebration, it is a spectacle that involves all the senses and marks the start of the Menorcan summer. Ciutadella becomes the epicenter of this unforgettable experience: Menorcan horses soaring through the air, riders dressed in costume, traditional music that makes your skin crawl and an atmosphere like nothing else.

The festivities, which are held on June 23 and 24, have centuries of history. What began as a religious pilgrimage in the 14th century is today an explosion of emotions that mixes solemnity and joy. It all begins with the Diumenge des Be, a procession with a live lamb that goes through the streets, announcing the beginning of the festival. Then comes the Primer Toc, the exact moment when everything gets underway. And from there, Ciutadella is transformed: horses and riders parade through the crowd, the music of the jaleo echoes in every corner and the squares are filled with applause and excitement.

The hullabaloo, the games and the thrill of living it.

The central act of the festivities is the Jaleo, where horses are raised on their hind legs through the crowd to the rhythm of the band. Adrenaline is mixed with devotion and respect, and the public is an active part of the celebration. Watching the caixers and cavallers guide their mounts through the crowd is something not easily forgotten.

In addition to the jousting, on the 24th the Jocs des Pla, a medieval joust on horseback that combines speed, skill and tradition, are held. Watching the riders throw their lances to hit rings or break shields in the middle of a natural arena is an authentic Menorcan experience.

An appointment not to be missed

The Fiestas de Sant Joan are not just another activity: they are the soul of Menorca in its purest state. Participating as a spectator is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and understand why these celebrations are so deeply rooted in the hearts of Menorcans.

If you are lucky enough to be in Menorca on those dates, do not think about it. Live the atmosphere, listen to the fabiol, taste the “gin amb llimonada” very cold and let yourself be carried away by an experience that goes far beyond tourism: an immersion in the soul of the island.
