An island that has it all: culture, memory and natural beauty.
Menorca is full of exciting places, but few combine so much living history, contemporary art and scenic beauty as the King’s Island, located in the middle of the port of Mahon, one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean. It can only be reached by boat, which makes the visit something special. A short crossing that transports you to centuries of history, tranquil gardens and surprising artistic spaces.
A historic legacy lovingly restored
King’s Island was a strategic point for centuries. Its name comes from the arrival of King Alfonso III in 1287, but its strongest imprint was left by the 18th century military hospital, built by the British and used for more than 200 years. Today, that hospital has been carefully restored by a group of volunteers, bringing it back to life stone by stone. Strolling through its rooms is like leafing through an open book of Menorca’s naval and medical history.
In addition, the remains of a Paleochristian basilica from the 6th century are preserved in the same enclave, with ancient mosaics that remind us of the spiritual importance of the place for more than a thousand years.
Contemporary art in a unique setting
Since 2021, the international gallery Hauser & Wirth has transformed part of the island into a first-class contemporary art space. The proposal coexists harmoniously with the environment: respectful architecture, gardens designed by Piet Oudolf and exhibitions that change every season. Here art can be breathed, walked and contemplated in front of the sea.
A visit for all the senses
King’s Island is not just a museum or an open-air tour. It is a complete experience:
-
Watch sunrise or sunset overlooking the harbor
-
Walking among Mediterranean gardens and sculptures
-
Have a drink in their restaurant with local products
-
Talk to volunteers who tell you real stories
All this in a quiet, well-kept, unhurried environment. One of those places that leave a mark.
